Overview:
Canary is the seventh studio album by Seiko Matsuda, released on December 10, 1983.
The title “Canary” means “canary”, and symbolizes hope and freedom. It has a bright and cheerful atmosphere like the song of a canary, and at the same time, it shows Seiko Matsuda’s intention to express her free musical expression.
This album is said to be Seiko Matsuda’s favorite album. Along with her previous work “Utopia(ユートピア)” and 1986’s “SUPREME”, it is considered a masterpiece by fans.
It is said that the album title was “Jewels” until just before its release. At the time, it was promoted under the previous name on a radio show hosted by Seiko Matsuda, but after many twists and turns, it was changed to the current title.
The second track, “Canary”, is the first song composed by Seiko Matsuda.
All the lyrics were written by Takashi Matsumoto (松本隆). Track 8, , has only 7 lines of lyrics. Takashi Matsumoto, who wrote the lyrics, said that it was his first time writing such short lyrics.
The main tracks are track 5, Diamond Eyes, and track 9, Photograph of Yesterdays.
