Macross: Flash Back 2012
Overview:
This OVA was released on June 21, 1987, and has a running time of 30 minutes. It is the last installment of the Super Dimension Fortress Macross to be edited into a music video by Lynn Minmay.
Originally, the movie “Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love” was supposed to have an ending video after the main story, but due to unavoidable circumstances, production was canceled. The video was supposed to feature a concert scene of Lynn Minmay singing the ending song “Angel’s Paint.” This OVA was planned to recreate that scene, and was made like a 1980s idol music video.
In terms of content, it is a video that shows Minmay’s past, present, and future. The phrases ‘yesterday’, ‘today’, and ‘tomorrow’ that appear at the beginning of ‘Angel’s Painting PART 1’ express this well.
Most of the footage is edited from the TV and theater versions, and there are also live-action footage mixed in. The newly inserted footage is “Angel’s Painting” and “Runner,” which are some of the few animations for which Haruhiko Mikimoto was properly the animation director. Yoshinobu Inano and Hiroyuki Kitakubo participated in the original artwork. All of the dialogue is from the main story, and there is no additional recorded audio.
