1. LaserDisc Ripping

■ What is a laser disc?

Laserdisc consists of 720 x 480 resolution video and uncompressed audio. Since laserdisc is uncompressed audio, the audio quality is very good, similar to Blu-ray. Especially when watching in an environment equipped with an audio system, you can be more immersed in the video. However, the downside is that the video size is 4.5 times smaller than the resolution of 4K video, 3840 x 2160.

■ LaserDisc Ripping Process

In order to take advantage of both the low resolution of the laser disc and the high quality of the audio, the video is upscaled to 4K 120FPS using AI upscaling technology, and the audio is extracted with the highest quality 192KHz/24bit spec. The audio is extracted by removing as much hum noise as possible throughout the laser disc.
Finally, the client will receive the video in 1. MKV (H265, 120FPS) 2. MKV (H264, 60FPS) format and 3. WAV format. The audio can be divided by track or provided as a single track depending on the request.

■ Limitation

Since laser discs are old, they may have a lot of noise in the media itself, and noise is also upscaled during the AI upscaling process. It is mainly expressed as small, random white dots on the screen. Noise may also occur in the audio.
AI upscaling isn’t perfect, it looks somewhat artificial, and small objects are severely distorted.

■ File size

It is about 5GB to 15GB based on the A+B side of LD. We will share it with Google Drive for 2 weeks.
※ For optical output built into the TV, the sound quality will be significantly reduced because it is a lower quality standard than 192KHz/24bit. We recommend using an external player (such as Zidoo).
