Utopia(ユートピア)
Overview:
Utopia (ユートピア) is the sixth studio album by Seiko Matsuda, released on June 1, 1983. It was released as blue-island/south-wind instead of side A/B. It won the Japan Record Award(日本レコード大賞) for Best Album.
The album cover is an homage to Olivia Newton-John’s 1976 album ‘Come on Over’.
The album title ユートピア means “utopia”, and symbolizes the dream and hope for an ideal world. This album is themed around Seiko’s ideal world and romantic love of her, and captures her pure and clear image of her well.
The original title of the second track, Miami Gozen Goji (マイアミ午前5時), was Kamakura Gozen Goji (鎌倉幕府午前5時), but the background was changed from Kamakura to overseas Miami to match the image of the third track, Seychelle No Yuuhi (セイシェルの夕陽).
It is said that when Seiko was recording Seychelle No Yuuhi (セイシェルの夕陽), the recording continued until the night because she was not able to achieve the feeling she wanted, and she became extremely depressed. At that time, the composer Masaaki Omura had a yellow Volkswagen, and he drove Seiko around and said, “Seiko can’t go to McDonald’s, so I’ll buy it for you,” and asked her what she wanted to eat. Seiko ordered a cheeseburger, French fries, and a milkshake, and Masaaki Omura brought them to the recording studio to eat them. Afterwards, Seiko, feeling refreshed, said on air that she was able to finish recording without any problems.
The main tracks are track 5, Tengoku no Kiss (天国のキッス), and track 9, Himitsu no Hanazono (秘密の花園).
